What's Healthier?

Last Thursday I got Shape magazine in the mail. I love reading Shape....it kinda gets me pumped up :) But the best part is it isn't even mine, I dont pay for it. It is for the people who used to live here and never got their address changed....so I get to read it for free!!! :-)

This month has Marisa Miller on the cover. She is my favorite VS model. I want her body!!! I guess I gotta get me some longer legs for starters ;)
Anyways, so there is an article that is called 'what's healthier?'
It is pretty interesting actually. I played the game to myself to see if I answered correctly before I actually read the entire article. Please tell me you do that sometimes too :)
If not, do it here :) I am going to post the 10 items and see if you get the answers right before reading further down. Ready?

1. glazed donut or bagel with cream cheese?
2. french toast or pancakes?
3. potato skins or chicken fingers?
4. nuts or dried fruit?
5. smoothie or cereal with fruit?
6. bloody mary or mimosa?
7. turkey sandwhich or tuna?
8. chicken casear salad or grilled chicken sandwhich?
9. chicken thighs or pork chops?
10. soft pretzel or hotdog?

1. Go for the donut! It has 260 and 2 fewer grams of fat than the bagel
(medium bagel= 320 calories plus 150 calories for 2 tablespoons of cream cheese)

2. French Toast especially because the egg coating adds protein.
A slice of french toast is 150 calories and 7 grams of fat, whereas a 6 inch pancake is 175 calories and 7 grams of fat plus about 100 more calories for 2 tablespoons of syrup.

3. Potato Skins especially if topped with veggies.
They have potassium, fiber, vitamin C, calcium and protein if containing cheese. The chicken fingers have lots of preservatives that are just bad for you all the time.

4. Nuts! They are high in fiber, vitamin E, protein. Yes they are high in fat and calories (168 calories and 14 grams of fat per ounce) but most of the fat is heart-healthy monounsaturated. If you want to get a little nuts (ahaha, I know I'm hilarious) then add some dried fruit (69 claories and no fat per ounce) and get the best of both worlds :)

5. Cereal. Although both are high in antioxidants, cereal is a better breakfast option because it give women the iron, calcium, and folic acid we are all low in. Look for cereals with whole grain as the first ingredient and no more than 9 grams of sugar per serving.

6. Bloody Mary. It contains much less sugar than the mimosa.
Also tomatoes have lycopene which is shown to protect against cancer.

7. Turkey Sandwich. Order it with mustard instead of mayo and you will get just 350 calories and 5 grams of fat compared to tuna salad's 680 calories and 41 grams of fat. Although if you just eat tuna from the can with nothing on it...there is no comparison, it is much better for you. Opt for tuna instead of albacore, it contains less harmful mercury.

8. Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Anything with creamy dressing is going to be packed with calories. The casear has 490 calories and 32 grams of fat, compared to 340 claories and just 7 grams of fat for the sandwich.

9. Pork Chop. Chicken is only the leanest meat when you eat skinless breast. Prok loin you'll get about 100 claories and 2 grams of fat per 3 ounce serving. The dark meat chicken will give you 177 calories and 9 grams of fat. The amount of protein is the same. Just be careful to not add greasy things to the meat.

10. Pretzel. Although they are very comparable. Hot dog is 460 calories and the pretzel is 488 calories. BUT the hot dog has 21 grams of fat and more than 1,000 milligrams of sodium. The pretzel has 4 grams of fat and 557 milligrams of sodium. Lastly, there is a study that found if you eat just one hot dog-or 2 ounces of processed meat-a day increased heart disease risk by 42 percent.

Well there you have it...my fun little game. I sure learned a lot, although some of it I already knew. Hope you enjoyed and learned some too!!! :)

I got 9 out of 10, yay me!! Who would have thought a hot dog would be better then a pretzel.. but maybe that's because I always get mine with cheese... and salt :)
