Dealing With Medi-Cal

Ever wonder what it's like to deal with Medi-Cal. It sucks! It is the biggest pain in the ass ever!!
See we lost our health insurance at work the end of September, right in the middle of us going to the infertility doctor. Obviously that wasn't covered, but we were enough into the process we didn't want to stop because of no more health insurance. So, we decided to continue and we would end up getting Covered California or something similar.

Or so we thought...

Turns out we didn't qualify for Covered California because we make too damn much money. Which in reality is sooooo not the case. Trust me. I won't be specific, but currently we together make what usually one person makes. Yea, it sucks...but that's what happens when we both go to school and then can't get amazing jobs afterwards. Anyways, that's a whole other topic.

Not qualifying for Covered California really pissed us off. How in the world do all these illegals or people who barely work qualify for this shit, but those of us who work our asses off, get nothing. It makes absolutely zero sense. Those people in the White House really suck if you ask me. But they don't care because they can afford healthcare with their salaries and/or get shit for free because of who they are.

Well, let me just say, that is bullshit!! Tony and I have gotten rid of quite a few things in the last several months to be able to afford IVF and proceeding forward with health insurance. We have sacrificed quite a bit, and most recently moved in with family. Yea...not my ideal situation, but when the government doesn't help and actually makes things work, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Tony was talking to his boss one day, and she informed him since I'm pregnant, I can qualify for Medi-Cal. Well hallelujah, let the angels sing!! I can actually get free healthcare like all the other illegals or bums that do nothing with their lives?!?!? I will 100% take advantage of that too. For myself and for all my family and friends that feel the same as I do.

Come to find out, it isn't as easy and simple as I assumed it was. It is actually the biggest headache and pain in the ass. I signed up for Medi-Cal in October and just yesterday on January 7, 2015 I have a doctor and a appointment scheduled. About three months later!!!

I was on the phone with 20 different people on Monday and Tuesday trying to figure out which doctor in our area accepts Medi-Cal. Apparently I was naive in thinking getting a doctor, etc with Medi-Cal was easy, or just never thought that most of the people who have Medi-Cal would deal with this. Every single person I spoke with, gave me a name and number of someone else. I kept telling them I needed to get to a doctor asap because I am 14 weeks pregnant and haven't been since I 'graduated at 10 weeks' from the IVF doctor. Then they ask me, well have you taken a pregnancy test?? I respond: Ummm yes you idiot, I just said I did IVF and graduated from him at 10 weeks.

I went from talking to Medi-cal, to LA Care, to 10 different medical offices, to Healthcare LA, to Care 1st Health Plan, to Kaiser, to LA Care, to Care 1st Health Plan. And you know, the most helpful people were the ones at Care 1st Health Plan. They called different people for me. They did paperwork for me and faxed it to the appropriate places, they helped me actually find a doctor with great ratings.

Oh speaking of, Medi-Cal signed me up with a doctor of their choice, because I guess I forgot to fill some part of the form out. Yea, you know what, that doctor had 1 star. One lousy star!!! Who the hell would go to a doctor like that?!?!?

Thank God for the two ladies I spoke with at Care 1st Health Plan, they found me a legit, high rated doctor, at a great hospital.

Needless to say, if you ever need Medi-Cal be prepared to work your ass off; to get pushed around; but if they say they will call you back, don't wait too long, call back in a few hours; and be firm.

But for those of you who have 'normal' insurance, props to you!! Less of a hassle and headache.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with all of this especially after going through everything with IVF.

As an HR professional, I feel some of your frustrations, though I am sure you have way more with every right. I see people apply every day who are living off the system, getting free money without having to take any drug screen at all. And, why get a job when they can get free government money? UGH. I'll stop while I'm ahead.

But, I am glad you have found a doctor. This child is already SO loved and you are both already amazing parents.

Oh my! What a headache! And because you are working it's not like you have all the time in the world to make all of these calls/jump through all of these hoops! What a pain! I am glad you have a doctor you feel safe with, that is so important!

Yes, Medi-cal sucks, and I'm happy to hear you found a suitable doctor. But frankly, it's beyond me how you could "make too much money" to qualify for California Connect--which is the state healthcare exchange for working, middle-class people whom you and your husband certainly look to be (IVF treatments???_)--and yet somehow you *don't* make too much for Medi-Cal--the government healthcare program for extremely low income CA residents--POOR PEOPLE--like me, living on a disability stipend.

What's more, your "undeserving aliens and bums and layabouts" rant does not become you. You sound like some ignoble, ungenerous, ungrateful nasty miser.

Actually the representation of this program is exceptionally misleading!!! I think the State Government, if it were a private enterprise, could be sued for false advertising ! Irt certainly is not free. I called the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging and asked about the California Estate Recovery Program, and the representative played dumb; I tried another time with the same results.I know that The State will come after one's relatives for reimbursement after the recipient dies, and the recipient cn not in reality own anything of value. Medi Cal is a flawed program with some of the worst medical care, especially if one goes to clinics. An elderly lady who is a friend of my family is on the program, and now when she is in urgent need of an operation, can not get it for at least several or more months and has had to wait to see her doctor at the clinic for a month or more. Moreover, much is not covered as in glasses. I called the Covered California Line, and they denied me due to my income, and said that I would be signing up for Medi Cal even though I REFUSED TWO OR THREE TIMES. Rather than be on Medi Cal, I will move out of California for good. Why work hard, have to answer to a meddling bureaucrat, be forbidden to own things of a certain value as the Irish were under Cromwell, or have to rid myself of items for a socialist crappy care program. NO!
