Ever wonder what it's like to deal with Medi-Cal. It sucks! It is the biggest pain in the ass ever!!
See we lost our health insurance at work the end of September, right in the middle of us going to the infertility doctor. Obviously that wasn't covered, but we were enough into the process we didn't want to stop because of no more health insurance. So, we decided to continue and we would end up getting Covered California or something similar.
Or so we thought...
Turns out we didn't qualify for Covered California because we make too damn much money. Which in reality is sooooo not the case. Trust me. I won't be specific, but currently we together make what usually one person makes. Yea, it sucks...but that's what happens when we both go to school and then can't get amazing jobs afterwards. Anyways, that's a whole other topic.
Not qualifying for Covered California really pissed us off. How in the world do all these illegals or people who barely work qualify for this shit, but those of us who work our asses off, get nothing. It makes absolutely zero sense. Those people in the White House really suck if you ask me. But they don't care because they can afford healthcare with their salaries and/or get shit for free because of who they are.
Well, let me just say, that is bullshit!! Tony and I have gotten rid of quite a few things in the last several months to be able to afford IVF and proceeding forward with health insurance. We have sacrificed quite a bit, and most recently moved in with family. Yea...not my ideal situation, but when the government doesn't help and actually makes things work, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Tony was talking to his boss one day, and she informed him since I'm pregnant, I can qualify for Medi-Cal. Well hallelujah, let the angels sing!! I can actually get free healthcare like all the other illegals or bums that do nothing with their lives?!?!? I will 100% take advantage of that too. For myself and for all my family and friends that feel the same as I do.
Come to find out, it isn't as easy and simple as I assumed it was. It is actually the biggest headache and pain in the ass. I signed up for Medi-Cal in October and just yesterday on January 7, 2015 I have a doctor and a appointment scheduled. About three months later!!!
I was on the phone with 20 different people on Monday and Tuesday trying to figure out which doctor in our area accepts Medi-Cal. Apparently I was naive in thinking getting a doctor, etc with Medi-Cal was easy, or just never thought that most of the people who have Medi-Cal would deal with this. Every single person I spoke with, gave me a name and number of someone else. I kept telling them I needed to get to a doctor asap because I am 14 weeks pregnant and haven't been since I 'graduated at 10 weeks' from the IVF doctor. Then they ask me, well have you taken a pregnancy test?? I respond: Ummm yes you idiot, I just said I did IVF and graduated from him at 10 weeks.
I went from talking to Medi-cal, to LA Care, to 10 different medical offices, to Healthcare LA, to Care 1st Health Plan, to Kaiser, to LA Care, to Care 1st Health Plan. And you know, the most helpful people were the ones at Care 1st Health Plan. They called different people for me. They did paperwork for me and faxed it to the appropriate places, they helped me actually find a doctor with great ratings.
Oh speaking of, Medi-Cal signed me up with a doctor of their choice, because I guess I forgot to fill some part of the form out. Yea, you know what, that doctor had 1 star. One lousy star!!! Who the hell would go to a doctor like that?!?!?
Thank God for the two ladies I spoke with at Care 1st Health Plan, they found me a legit, high rated doctor, at a great hospital.
Needless to say, if you ever need Medi-Cal be prepared to work your ass off; to get pushed around; but if they say they will call you back, don't wait too long, call back in a few hours; and be firm.
But for those of you who have 'normal' insurance, props to you!! Less of a hassle and headache.
